When Angie Alt of http://alt-ternativeautoimmune.com/ shared with me that she was writing an Autoimmune Cookbook, I was excited and impatient. I have so many Paleo Cookbooks on my shelves but only a two that are 100% Compliant with the Autoimmune Protocol Diet (AIP) (The Paleo Approach Cookbook by Sarah Ballantyne & Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook by Mickey Trescott). I was particularly excited that Angie’s book was going to be released before Christmas and that it was available in eBook and Amazon Print. I love having my books when I travel, so I often will purchase both the eBook and the hard copy so that I have one to read with my daughter (and turn down the pages of recipes we want to try) and one on my Kindle/iPad Kindle App. So Dec 1st was a long time coming…
Angie and I have known each other for just under a year, when I signed up for AIP Health Coaching with The Paleo Mom Consulting, I was drawn to Angie a Health Coach who had graduated from The Institute of Integrative Nutrition on the same program I will finish in just three weeks, and within 30 minutes of our first appointment, I knew I had struck GOLD!
Angie is real, and when I say real I mean REAL…who else would deliver a “Butt Manifesto”, make fun of the acronyms we use daily and make up her own “HMBTCPW” (you have to read the book to find out what it stands for) not to mention share that decisions regarding her health that stopped her family from living their dream of living overseas caused some relationship struggles. Angie shares the real side of having Autoimmune disease, the misdiagnoses, infertility, stress on relationships and the anger, vulnerability and catch 22 feelings of having to eliminate foods from your diet in order to get well. Supporting those stories are tools that will guide you through AIP including 6 Stages of Food Elimination, Reintroduction Recommendations and Food Reaction Templates to help monitor your progress.
The photogenic recipes that Angie created with her sister Jenifer Beehler, are inspiring and dishes you can make in your suburban kitchen, are sophisticated yet simple enough for any home cook, with minimal ingredients and ingredients that you typically have already in your pantry… so much so that my daughter and I cooked a recipe without nipping out to the store (Mmmmhmmm those Carrot Cake Macaroons and Autumn Cider Sorbet were AMAZING!!!!). To me this book really delivers on so so many levels!
So in summary this book is a must have for anyone who …
- wants a nonscientific yet structured guiding light to start AIP
- wants a simple yet concise understanding of AIP, such as a healthcare provider or health coach
- needs a holistic understanding of AIP to support a loved one
- who has been on the AIP and needs a support tool
This is a book that the Autoimmune Protocol Community needed, a holistic and real guide to AIP with soul and grace. Congratulations Angie & Jenifer you’ve done the community proud!
